It was a dull, overcast morning at Woodhead, in stark contrast to the sun that had greeted us the week before in Malton.

Nerves were very much in evidence from parents and players alike as the boys kicked off at for a place in the final of the Yorkshire cup. Malton gave the Brods a scare inside the first minute when their Fijian centre saw a gap and made a break. However a try saving tackle from Tom Inman let the boys off the hook. That brief reminder of last weeks mistakes prompted the boys to stick to the basics. After a great build up in the second quarter a penalty was awarded to the Brods inside Malton's 10m line. James Thackray played a quick ball, catching the Malton backs napping and was able to dive over between the uprights. Inman converted. From the restart the Brods forwards worked hard recycling the ball well, making good yards with ball in hand. Their attacking game made it difficult for Malton to keep possession.

After the break a nervous period followed - but the boys had a game plan and they stuck to it. After some great defensive play from Dan Leahy and Dawson Birkett more of the same followed. The boys were quick up to meet their opponents, forcing mistakes, repeatedly rucking Malton off the ball and re-gaining possession. A nice chip down field from Inman found touch. Malton chose a scrum again over a line out which the Brods duly won. Jackson Wood saw his chance, charging hard and low to cross the whitewash. Inman took the extras. In the dying minutes Michael Jones touched down by the corner flag to the delight of the home crowd. Inman kicked the young Brods into a 21/0 lead sealing the win and a well deserved place in the final.

Commiserations to Malton & Norton; they were tough opponents, and fought on to the final whistle. It was great to see the boys shaking hands in the club house and wishing us good luck in the final. Good luck next year!
