Hullensians 0 brods 26
Brods progressed to the semi final of the Yorkshire shield following an impressive performance at Hullensians .
Playing with the assistance of a gale force wind in the first half they controlled the game from the kick off with a clear game plan which was delivered with great enthusiasm .
The team selected for the fixture was full of youth and including numerous players with little or no experience of rugby at this level however with Olly Across in the pack and Phil Town directing the back line the Woodhead boys rose to the occasion and produced a performance of great quality .
Brods showed their intent in the opening exchanges gaining good field position and controlling the majority of possession . The young front row of Pete Ashton , Jack Moger and Joe Sealey made an early impression by shunting their counterparts off the ball at the first scrum and repeated the exercise regularly throughout the game . After 10 minutes play one such scrum produced great ball for Bradley Martin who dived over the line from close quarters to open the scoring and Phil Town converted from the touchline 7-0 .Brods swiftly added to the score when Zac Thompson entered the line and stretched the defensive line with his pace and his excellent arcking run took him to the line to extend the lead to 12 nil after 15 minutes.
The Woodhead boys repulsed the home sides attempts to take the initiative with some solid defence and cleared their lines with some good kicking by Town and Thompson .Will Mcloughlin worked overtime in the back row and James Crabtree was dominant in the line out.. Cameron Wroot featured strongly both in attack and defence however with half time approaching it remained to be seen as to whether Hullensians could take any advantage of the elements
the visitors showed great intent from the start of the second half keeping the ball tight to the ruck and kept their discipline with club coach Olly Akroyd leading his players around the park .With several penalties awarded to the Brods due to Hulls indiscretions the Woodhead boys worked their way against the elements to camp in their opponents 22.Pete ashton caught the eye with his repeated carries to maintain the Brods stranglehold on the match however the Hull side defended well and from a ruck on their own line their scrum half showed great pace to break through the brods defence and clear deep into brods territory . Brods now had to show their own defensive qualities on their own line . This they achieved and brods cleared their lines before working their way back upfield with controlled possession ..With injuries taking their toll three young debutants entered the field of play, Josh Thaxter , Tom Clee and Harry Wardman all entered the fray to provide more energy and enthusiasm to the controlled rugby in the opposition territory .As play entered the final quarter Zac Thompson received the ball just inside the Hull half and his quick feet took him clear as he spotted a gap in the home sides defensive line . After breaking the first tackle he broke clear and beat the covering full back for pace and dived over the line for an outstanding effort .Town converted again and with a 19 nil scoreline Brods were closing in on a an excellent victory . The home team however had different ideas as they tried to recover the initiative and Brods had to defend their line from some sustained pressure . In their desperation and a loose pass Jason Dodd pounced on a loose ball and his kick through was chased by himself and his brother James . James Dodd gathered the bouncing ball and he ran clear of all defenders to score the final try which Town duly converted .Brods played out the closing minutes of the game in control and progress to the Semi final where they are expected to play League leaders Moortown .
